Nutrition

Balanced nutrition does not have to be complicated.
I have learned over the years that if patients think something is going to be difficult to do they will typically follow new guidelines for no more than a week. That holds true with taking their prescriptions, exercise and changing their diet.

Dr. John Douillard, author of the 3-Season Diet recently stated at a conference that he advised patients to eat an improved, healthy, nutritious diet 51% of the time. You will probably agree as the conference audience that everyone should be able to do that. Why only 51% … Don’t you think it’s better to do more the audience asked. Yes, stated Dr. Douillard…but 51% is what everyone without much stress can handle when it comes to changing their diet.

Plus….this is the best part…if people change 51% they will start to feel the difference. Once they feel what the changes do, it’s easier to increase the percentage. Ideally we should all eat a wholesome, balanced diet 70-80% of the time. The doctor also cautioned not to exceed that percentage as this is the real world, we have birthdays, holidays, office parties, special family nights, etc. Enjoying life and the special moments is important and you should be able to eat and drink what you chose.

OK, so you now understand that you don’t have to be perfect. The next obvious question is what should I eat. I advise patients to eat as natural and organically as they can afford. I do favor places like the Outpost, Trader Joes and Whole Foods. The issue of costs often comes up. One thing that I have learned is once your kitchen makes the transformation, and this does take a little time, the difference in costs is nominal. This is why. At places like the Outpost you can buy in bulk. When you shop the other stores, shop the outer edges. This is where you find wholesome foods. Packaged, processed, frozen and bagged foods all cost the consumer more and in most cases, lack the nutrition we all need.

Next I could stress the importance of making sure you increase your intake of fruits, vegetables and grains…but I won’t. I am sure you have heard this over and over again.

Everybody is different. We all need basic nutrition to thrive and many of as need added quantities to heal. For that reason there is a Holistic Nutritionist, Renee Walls, on Healthguard’s staff. She can design a plan that is right for you…and most important, one you can live with.  So please contact out office, or check back later on our web site for specific tips Renee has to offer.

Wishing you and your family improved health and nutrition.
