Staying Well

Breathe Easier This Winter:

This winter don’t let the common cold get you down. Some of the following suggestions will minimize your risk of getting a cold, aid in recovering sooner, or just help you to feel better until your health improves.

For starters, do drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration, aid in clearing toxins from your body and to loosen congestion. This does not mean alcohol and caffeinated beverages that actually dehydrate you.

Use a neti pot. This may sound primitive and look strange, but it truly can help you in preventing most colds along with allergy and sinus issues. The neti has long been revered as an Ayurveda remedy until recently when it was introduced on the Oprah show by Dr. Oz.

Neti pots are available at natural health food stores, many pharmacies and on-line. For more information search neti pot on the web.

If you do come down with a cold or scratchy throat nothing beats the saltwater gargle. Mix ½ teaspoon of salt with eight ounces of warm water.

If you are not a vegetarian, eat chicken soup. Season the soup with a little turmeric as this will act as an anti-inflammatory and help to relieve congestion. If you are a vegetarian, then enjoy a warm vegetable broth with the added spices, especially the turmeric.

Use a humidifier to prevent dry mucus membranes, stuffy noses and scratchy throats. Make sure you keep it cleaned properly and change the water daily. If you don’t have a humidifier, boil some water on the stovetop. Adding a few drops of eucalyptus essential oil will help you to breathe easier and make the house smell great.

Do allow your body to rest. It is so important to get adequate sleep. If you have a typical work schedule try to get into the habit of being in bed by 10pm and if you do come down with a cold, then go to bed even earlier. Your body heals during rest, so be kind to yourself and you will heal faster.
